The purpose of a work glove is to protect your hands from hazards and from getting injured while performing your job. And there are many different types of hazards, from sharp objects that can cut, to very cold or very hot objects, to harsh chemicals. And as these hazards can be harmful in different ways, glove materials have different properties too and are meant to protect in different environments. Some work gloves are made with very tough fibers, many times more resistant to abrasion than even steel, so when your hands would come in contact with a sharp piece of metal or glass, you will be protected by a cut resistant glove. But no material is universally resistant to everything - for cold or hot objects you need work gloves with specific thermal properties, while chemical resistance varies for different types of glove materials, such as nitrile, vinyl, neoprene or latex.
